Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, the New York City-based chain known for its fresh, inventive flavors, has further expanded its presence in the Boston area with the opening of a new scoop shop in Harvard Square, Cambridge. The store officially opened its doors on Friday, Nov. 22, adding to the brand’s growing footprint, which already includes locations in Chestnut Hill and Seaport.
To celebrate the launch, the Harvard Square location will offer $1 scoops on Thursday, Dec. 5, between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The first 100 customers will also receive complimentary Van Leeuwen tote bags.
Located at 1 Brattle Square, the new shop will operate daily, with hours from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and extended hours until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
In addition to the grand opening celebration, Van Leeuwen is offering a special student discount throughout December. Students can enjoy 15% to 30% off their purchases at the Harvard Square location by showing a valid school ID.
Founded in 2008 by Ben and Pete Van Leeuwen and Laura O’Neill, Van Leeuwen began its journey selling French-style ice cream from a yellow truck on the streets of New York City. The brand’s rich, egg yolk-infused ice cream quickly became a hit, and Van Leeuwen has since expanded to over 60 scoop shops across the United States, including in New York, California, New Jersey, Texas, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington D.C., and Florida.
The brand is also eyeing additional growth in Massachusetts, with new locations planned for Back Bay, Wellesley, and Fenway.
The Harvard Square shop will feature over 30 of Van Leeuwen’s signature ice cream flavors, including award-winning varieties like Vanilla Bean, Honeycomb, Pistachio, Marionberry Cheesecake, Praline Butter Cake, and Earl Grey Tea. Vegan options such as Banana Bread Pudding, Peanut Butter Brownie Honeycomb, and Strawberry Shortcake will also be available.
Beyond scoops, customers can indulge in sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes, root beer floats, and pints to-go. Van Leeuwen’s products, including pints, ice cream bars, and sandwiches, are available in grocery stores nationwide and can also be ordered online for delivery across the country.
