CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Four Seas Ice Cream, a beloved Cape Cod institution, has officially changed hands after being listed for sale earlier this year at $3 million. The deal was finalized on Wednesday, as confirmed by Carey Commercial Inc., the real estate firm overseeing the transaction.
While the exact sale price and terms remain undisclosed, the new owners, Josh and Leslie McElhattan, have expressed their commitment to preserving the shop’s legacy. In a statement, the McElhattans emphasized their experience in the ice cream business and their dedication to continuing the tradition of Four Seas, which has been run by Doug and Peggy Warren since 2000.
“We are trained in the operation of ice cream businesses and prepared to dedicate our full-time effort to making this a success that we and the Warren family can continue to be proud of,” the couple said.
A Storied Legacy
Founded in 1934, Four Seas Ice Cream is one of the oldest and most iconic ice cream parlors in New England. It has earned a loyal following, with celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Adam Sandler, and Ryan Reynolds spotted enjoying its signature treats. In 2021, WBZ-TV viewers ranked it among the top 50 ice cream shops in Massachusetts.
Known for its homemade flavors, including black raspberry, cookie dough, “chip chocolate,” and penuche pecan, Four Seas has also earned a place in history. In the 1980s, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis famously requested her favorite peach ice cream from the shop for a Hyannis Port celebration.
A Strong Market for a Cape Cod Icon
The sale of Four Seas attracted significant attention, with more than 40,000 inquiries about the property. The one-acre location on South Main Street in Centerville remained open throughout the sale process, reflecting the enduring appeal of the shop.
Carey Commercial reported that many prospective buyers expressed interest in maintaining the business’s continuity, underscoring the long-established success and reputation of Four Seas Ice Cream.
“The high level of interest is a testament to the momentum of the business and its place in the community,” the company said in a statement.
As the McElhattans take the reins, the future of Four Seas Ice Cream looks promising, with the new owners dedicated to keeping the iconic shop’s tradition alive for generations to come.
