Grand Traverse County, MI — Moomers Ice Cream, a popular destination for sweet treats during the summer months, has a special tradition that continues to spread holiday joy among its staff each year. The Grand Traverse County ice cream shop hosts a festive gingerbread house decorating contest that has become a highlight of the holiday season, with voting running through Christmas Eve.
The contest is a cherished event where Moomers’ employees engage in friendly competition to create the most creative and festive gingerbread houses. While the theme of the decorating challenge changes each year, the rules remain consistent. Each entry must be entirely edible and must fit within a 10x10x10-inch box.
Jon Plummer, Co-Owner of Moomers Homemade Ice Cream, explained the spirit behind the contest: “We’ll vote on it now through Christmas Eve, and then we will have some prizes—usually some cold, hard cash for our staff—but more importantly, bragging rights. The winner becomes the king or queen of the shop for the rest of the year, turning it into a fun atmosphere with a little in-house competition. It’s just a great way to embrace the season and have fun.”
The gingerbread houses will be on display for the public to admire, with voting open until Christmas Eve. Plummer emphasized the festive nature of the event, saying it brings staff together in a unique way, fostering camaraderie during the busy holiday season.
Moomers Homemade Ice Cream will close for the winter season in January and February to prepare for the busy summer months, ensuring they’re ready for the influx of customers once the warmer weather returns.
