Havana’s iconic Coppelia Ice Cream Parlor, famously dubbed the “Cathedral of Ice Cream,” is on track to reopen before the end of January 2025 after months of closure. This reopening follows a series of necessary updates to the facility, which has been closed since November 2024 due to a shortage of essential ingredients like milk and sugar.
A source within the establishment confirmed to CubaNet that the price of a scoop will rise to 25 Cuban pesos, a move attributed to the rising costs of raw materials. The announcement was made during a recent meeting with the president of the Internal Trade Business Group of Havana, where staff were briefed about the upcoming changes.
The Cuban authorities have set a one-week deadline for refurbishing the parlor, which includes repainting, updating furniture, and completing other aesthetic improvements. Though no specific reopening date has been confirmed, Coppelia is expected to welcome back patrons within the month.
In addition to the price hike, the revamped menu is set to include snacks like cookies and chocolates, following negotiations with related suppliers. Staff uniforms will also be updated as part of the ongoing renovations.
Despite rumors of privatization, the president of the State-owned Enterprises Group for Domestic Trade emphasized that Coppelia will remain under state management. While agreements with small and medium-sized enterprises could be pursued, the ice cream parlor will not be handed over to private ownership, as reported by CubaNet.
Since closing in November 2024, Coppelia has only been offering packaged sweets and large tubs of ice cream for purchase, but the absence of its iconic ice cream offerings has left locals yearning for the return of the popular landmark.
As the facility moves forward with renovations, hopes are high that this beloved institution will soon resume its place at the heart of Havana’s social and culinary scene.
