Beloved Leigh Ice Cream Parlour Closes After Six Successful Years Due to Rising Costs

by Alice

A popular ice cream parlour in Leigh, known for its delicious bubble waffles and sundaes, has closed its doors after six successful years, leaving the local community heartbroken.

Ru’s Bubble Waffles, located on Leigh Road, had become a favorite spot for families and residents, offering a unique mix of bubble waffles, ice cream, sundaes, and drinks. However, owner Ru Hudson, 27, made the difficult decision to shut down the beloved small business due to the growing financial pressures caused by rising costs.

The closure has sparked a wave of sadness across the community, with many residents expressing their disappointment on social media. Echo readers shared heartfelt messages, reminiscing about the business and its owner.

Rachel King shared a nostalgic memory, saying, “When my boys were younger we loved an early evening visit to Ru’s for a bubble waffle. Sorry to see further reality of our economy in another closure. All the best.”

Another local resident, Danielle Waite, fondly remembered the café as a favorite hangout. “No, we loved it here. Your waffles were amazing and such a nice little spot to come and have coffee and sit and watch the world go by,” she wrote.

Danielle Hurley called for more government support for independent businesses, commenting, “This is so sad, local independents should be protected to remain open. I would much rather our tax-paying money support situations like this.”

Ru’s Bubble Waffles managed to survive the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, but the current economic climate has made it increasingly difficult to sustain daily operations. In an interview with the Echo earlier this week, Hudson explained the financial strain that led to his decision.

“I’ve always dreamed of having a little business. I had a lot of experience in food and saw a gap in the market. There wasn’t an ice cream shop in this area,” Hudson shared. “Unfortunately, the high costs of products, the increase in rent, and electric bills have become too high. It’s all just too much, especially with the overall rise in the cost of living, which is affecting businesses everywhere, including mine.”

Hudson’s decision to close the business marks the end of a cherished local establishment, leaving many residents to reflect on its positive impact over the years.
