Bertie’s Creative Creamery has announced the closure of its Massachusetts locations in Milford and Westwood, ending a decade of service to local communities. The ice cream chain’s manager, Jim Collins, is retiring, prompting the decision to close both shops. The news was shared with fans through a Facebook post on Wednesday.
In a message posted by Stephen Ward, who operates the Cape Dairy Group, Ward expressed regret over the closures. He explained that his primary business commitments no longer allowed him the time needed to manage the ice cream parlors properly. Ward thanked Collins for his dedication, highlighting his leadership over the past ten years, and also expressed gratitude to the staff for their contributions.
“After careful deliberation, with full consideration of the extraordinary work that Jim does daily, I realize that I will not be able to dedicate the attention required to continuing the business,” Ward wrote.
Bertie’s Creative Creamery, known for its handmade ice cream and nostalgic parlor setting, had become a popular local spot. The shops featured a wide variety of flavors, ranging from traditional vanilla and chocolate to unique options like orange-pineapple and Kahlua fudge brownie. In addition to ice cream, Bertie’s served frozen yogurt, sorbet, sherbet, and soft serve.
The Westwood location opened in 2017, followed by the Milford store in 2020. While the Westwood shop operated seasonally, the Milford location remained open year-round. Fans of the ice cream parlor shared their appreciation on social media, with many reminiscing about favorite flavors such as the black raspberry Oreo and blueberry crumble.
Bertie’s closure marks the end of a beloved local establishment that was more than just a place to enjoy ice cream. Ward reflected on how the shops had become a gathering spot for families, teams, and friends, creating lasting memories.
“Bertie’s wasn’t just a place to scoop cones, it was a gathering place for championship teams, birthdays, after school, or simply a treat on a hot summer day,” Ward said in his post. “The kindness and support from the community will stay with me always.”
As the business moves forward, Ward extended his heartfelt thanks to the loyal customers and staff who helped make Bertie’s a treasured local institution.
