Purity Dairies, a Nashville-based company in operation for 99 years, will cease production of its ice cream products, according to multiple local media reports. The ice cream was previously made at a facility in Athens, Tennessee, which will now be dedicated to producing Mayfield Dairy ice cream.
Both Purity Dairies and Mayfield Dairy are owned by Dairy Farmers of America, a Kansas City-based cooperative. Dairy Farmers of America confirmed to WKRN that Purity Dairy ice cream products will be removed from store shelves by the end of the first quarter, with Mayfield Dairy ice cream replacing them. The company also stated that the discontinuation of ice cream production would not lead to any job losses.
The Murfreesboro Road facility in Nashville will continue to focus on producing milk products for the company.
Purity Dairies was founded in 1926 by Miles Ezell in Nashville. The company was acquired by Dean Foods in 1998, with family members of the Ezell family maintaining involvement in the management. In 2020, Dairy Farmers of America acquired Purity Dairies.
