LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) — The Wells Visitor Center & Ice Cream Parlor in Le Mars is celebrating a milestone anniversary as it commemorates 25 years of service to the community. Since its opening on March 6, 2000, the visitor center has become an integral part of Le Mars, contributing to its title as the “Ice Cream Capital of the World.”
Originally located along Highway 75, the center moved to its current downtown location in 2011. It underwent significant renovations and expansions in 2019, which included the addition of a movie theater, outdoor patio, and event room, further enhancing its appeal as a community gathering space.
The visitor center is a major tourism hub, annually drawing around 200,000 visitors. In 2024 alone, it sold 69,000 waffle cones of Blue Bunny ice cream, making it a key economic driver for the area.
Le Mars Mayor Rob Bixenman highlighted the center’s importance to both the local economy and the community. “As a major attraction, it draws ice cream enthusiasts from all corners of the globe, boosting the local economy and supporting other businesses,” he said. “It serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting events and celebrations that bring people together. By celebrating our rich dairy heritage, it helps preserve and promote Le Mars’ identity as the Ice Cream Capital of the World.”
Wells Vice President of Institutional Affairs and Corporate Communications Adam Baumgartner expressed gratitude for the center’s continued success. “We feel so fortunate to have the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor in Le Mars. The Visitor Center is the heartbeat of the company, showcasing Wells for all our guests from around the corner to around the world,” he said.
To celebrate its anniversary, the Wells Visitor Center will offer ice cream cones and bowls on March 6, 2025, at the same prices they were on the opening day. In addition, the center will host 25 weeks of festivities, featuring new menu items, throwback specials, discounts, and giveaways to honor the occasion.
