As temperatures rise in Chapel Hill, a new destination for ice cream lovers is arriving in University Place. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, a popular national chain, will hold a soft opening at its new location on Thursday at 223 South Estes Drive. This marks the third Jeni’s in the Triangle, joining the chain’s Raleigh and Durham stores.
The new ice cream shop is part of the ongoing redevelopment of University Place. Situated in the space once occupied by Southern Season, which was demolished in March 2023, Jeni’s Ice Creams becomes a key anchor in a revitalized section of the mall. The location is positioned next to a public green space that forms a centerpiece of the mall’s new design, which includes improved traffic flow with new connections on either side of the property. The mall will also feature seven new storefronts built into the central building.
The green space in front of Jeni’s will offer visitors various benches for seating, and it is expected to host future community programming. Another retail space is planned for the opposite end of the green area.
This opening is the second in a series of new businesses coming to University Place this February. A WakeMed MyCare 365 primary care and urgent care clinic opened its doors on the mall’s eastern side the week of February 10. After more than a year of construction and land clearing, new north-south roads have been completed, allowing vehicle and pedestrian traffic to flow freely through the area.
With the redevelopment of this section nearing completion, attention will soon shift to the next phase: the construction of mixed-use office spaces on the opposite side of the green space.
