Chapman’s Ice Cream, a beloved Canadian brand for nearly 50 years, is continuing its commitment to affordability and community support in the face of economic challenges, including the recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian dairy products.
In response to the tariffs, which have raised the cost of Canadian dairy imports, the Ontario-based company announced it will absorb the increased costs rather than pass them onto consumers. This decision highlights Chapman’s long-standing dedication to providing accessible products for Canadian families, even when faced with external pressures.
A Legacy of Resilience
Founded in 1973 by David and Penny Chapman in Markdale, Ontario, the company began as a small operation with just four employees and two trucks. Over the years, it has grown into Canada’s largest independent ice cream manufacturer, now offering over 280 frozen treats, including premium ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt, and novelty products like cones and sandwiches.
Despite its growth, Chapman’s has remained rooted in Markdale, the town where it all began. In 2009, the company faced a significant setback when a fire destroyed its production facility. However, Chapman’s emerged from this challenge stronger than ever, rebuilding with a state-of-the-art facility named “Phoenix,” nearly double the size of the original plant.
Prioritizing Employees During Tough Times
Chapman’s has faced more than just challenges related to trade. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company demonstrated its commitment to employee well-being by implementing a $2-per-hour pandemic pay increase for production and distribution workers in March 2020. Initially a temporary measure, the company later made the pay increase permanent by October 2020. The new starting wage for production employees became $18 per hour, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package, a company-sponsored pension plan, and a subsidized cafeteria.
Although the privately-held company does not publicly report earnings, its ability to continue thriving, despite prioritizing employee welfare, speaks volumes about its business model and community commitment.
50 Years of Innovation and Giving Back
In 2023, Chapman’s celebrated its 50th anniversary by launching a groundbreaking new product line—Super Premium Plus, the world’s first allergy-friendly super premium ice cream. This line, which is peanut-free, nut-free, and egg-free, underscores the company’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation.
Beyond its ice cream, Chapman’s has made significant contributions to the Markdale community. The company donated $1 million towards building a new local hospital and has supported numerous other community initiatives, reinforcing its deep connection to the town that helped it grow.
As Chapman’s continues to navigate challenges, from trade tariffs to global health crises, its decision to absorb the tariff costs rather than burden consumers is a testament to its values. The company’s actions reflect its enduring commitment to the community and its customers, solidifying its place as a true Canadian success story.
