Lotus Bakeries Expands Partnership with Froneri to Boost Global Ice Cream Growth

by Alice

LEMBEKE, BELGIUM – Lotus Bakeries Corp. has expanded its existing licensing agreement with Mondelez International to include Froneri International, a global ice cream manufacturer based in the UK. This move aims to further accelerate the growth of Lotus Biscoff, particularly in the ice cream sector.

The partnership, announced this week by the Belgium-based bakery company, is designed to leverage the strong appeal of Lotus Biscoff’s unique combination of crunchy pieces, smooth Biscoff spread, and fresh cream to capture a larger share of the global ice cream market.

To maximize the potential of this “high-growth category,” Lotus Bakeries plans to scale its ice cream portfolio worldwide by collaborating with Froneri, one of the industry’s largest players. This alliance will help expand market distribution, enhance product development capabilities, and improve manufacturing and logistics efficiencies through local production in key markets.

“Partnering with Froneri will open new opportunities for Biscoff, enabling us to leverage their deep expertise in product development, market insights, and industry knowledge,” said Jan Boone, CEO of Lotus Bakeries. “This collaboration will strengthen our position in the ice cream sector, allowing Biscoff to become a global ice cream brand. Additionally, introducing the Biscoff flavor to a broader audience will significantly increase our brand awareness.”

The agreement with Froneri is structured as a sub-license under Lotus Bakeries’ larger licensing pact with Chicago-based Mondelez, which was announced last June. Under the broader deal, the two companies are set to grow the Lotus Biscoff cookie brand in India and introduce new chocolate products combining Biscoff’s caramelized flavor with Mondelez’s Cadbury and Milka brands in Europe, with plans for global expansion. The first co-branded products are expected to launch in early 2025, starting with Cadbury and Biscoff in the United Kingdom and Milka and Biscoff in Europe.

With an estimated 2024 revenue of €1.23 billion ($1.34 billion), Lotus Bakeries operates production facilities in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, South Africa, and the United States. A new plant under construction in Thailand is expected to open by 2026. The company’s portfolio includes brands such as Lotus, Biscoff, Nakd, Trek, Bear, Kiddylicious, Peter’s Yard, Dinosaurus, Peijnenburg, and Annas.
