Moorenko’s Ice Cream in Silver Spring Temporarily Closed for Medical Reasons

by Alice

Moorenko’s Ice Cream, a beloved café in downtown Silver Spring, has temporarily closed its doors due to medical reasons, according to signage posted at the establishment.

Founded in 2002 by Susan Soorenko, Moorenko’s gained recognition for its high-quality ice cream, which Soorenko learned to make after training in New York and studying gelato-making under a master craftsman in Italy. The café sources its dairy from grass-fed cows on small, family-owned farms in Pennsylvania.

The shop, located at 8030 Georgia Avenue, has been closed for several weeks, with some online sources suggesting it may not reopen. Reports indicate that Soorenko requires surgery, which has prompted the closure.

Moorenko’s ice cream is known for its ultra-premium quality, containing 17% milk fat, which gives it a richer, creamier, and naturally sweeter taste compared to other ice creams. The products are also certified rBST- and antibiotic-free.

In 2021, Washingtonian Magazine editors selected Moorenko’s “Cookie Overload” flavor as one of their top ten local favorites, referring to it as “cheaper than therapy.”

While the closure is temporary, loyal customers are hopeful for the café’s swift return once Soorenko’s health allows.
