Surfin’ Spoon Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for all 5 oz. packages of its ice cream sandwich, “The Classic,” after it was discovered that the product contains an undeclared lecithin (soy) ingredient. The recall, announced on March 16, 2025, was initiated as a precautionary measure following concerns that consumers with soy allergies may be at risk.
The affected products, which do not list soy as an ingredient or allergen on the packaging, may pose a risk to individuals with severe soy allergies. Lecithin, a common emulsifier, contains trace amounts of soy protein, which could trigger an allergic reaction.
The recalled ice cream sandwiches are packaged in clear plastic, with “The Classic” printed on a white background. The recalled products can be identified by the following Best By Dates and Production Codes:
Best By Dates: 03-31-2025, 04-29-2025, 04-30-2025, 04-31-2025, 05-27-2025, 05-20-2025, 05-13-2025, and 05-12-2025.
Production Codes: 3662024, 0292025, 0302025, 0312025, 0432025, 0442025, 0512025, and 0582025.
The recall was prompted by an inspection from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA), which revealed that the Hershey’s Mini Chocolate Chips used in “The Classic” contained lecithin, a soy derivative. Surfin’ Spoon Inc. had failed to list soy as an ingredient or allergen, leading to the recall. The company has attributed the issue to a breakdown in its production and packaging processes.
To date, no illnesses have been reported. Surfin’ Spoon Inc. distributed the affected ice cream sandwiches in retail stores across North Carolina.
Consumers who have purchased “The Classic” ice cream sandwiches and have a severe soy allergy are advised not to consume the product. They should either dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
