SURRY, Maine (WABI) — A beloved local business marked a major milestone on Friday as Pugnuts Ice Cream & Gelato kicked off its 10th season serving sweet treats to the Surry community.
Co-owners Eric Treworgy and Carlton Holmes opened the shop a decade ago along Route 172 with a clear vision: to offer something distinct in an area already rich with quality ice cream options.
“We knew if we were going to open an ice cream store, we had to do something very, very different,” said Treworgy. “So, we went to Italy to study gelato-making and to Penn State to learn the craft of ice cream.”
The result is a menu packed with unique, house-made flavors that keep customers coming back. But it’s not just the product that sets Pugnuts apart — it’s the personality. The store is adorned with pug-themed decor, a playful homage to Holmes’ former pet, a pug named Nip.
“An ice cream store is a lot more fun if you’ve got a theme,” said Treworgy. “Carl used to have a pug and suggested we build the store’s identity around that. So, we did!”
Since opening, Pugnuts has become more than just a dessert destination. It has grown into a local hub, offering a warm, welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.
“Being born and raised here, it’s so rewarding to run a small business where you really get to know your neighbors,” Treworgy said. “This shop has become a gathering place for the community.”
Currently, Pugnuts is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily hours will resume following Mother’s Day.
In addition to their flagship store, Pugnuts’ products can be found at several Hannaford supermarkets across Maine, Tiller & Rye in Brewer, and even at Acadia National Park — extending their whimsical charm and artisan ice cream to fans throughout the region.
