CHICAGO, IL — Imagine ordering your favorite ice cream flavor from a puppet. This whimsical experience is now a reality at a new ice cream shop nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood.
Situated near Elston and Hamlin avenues, “Sugar Hole” offers a unique twist on traditional ice cream service, where patrons can interact with a puppet through a walk-up window while indulging in quality ice cream flavors.
Owned by the husband-and-wife duo, Josh Dihle and Abby Monro, the establishment holds historical significance as it was the inaugural meeting place of Chicago’s International Order of Vikings. Originally owned by the Latvian Community Center and Folk Art Museum since 1958, the building underwent extensive renovations in 2020 under the couple’s ownership, transforming into a vibrant community center and art studio.
Adding a touch of enchantment to the neighborhood, the puppet named “Aurora Bearialis” was crafted by renowned Chicago sculptor and animal enthusiast, Emile Helene Wingate.
“Sugar Hole” welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., offering outdoor seating and the delightful experience of interacting with Aurora Bearialis through the walk-up window located on the Hamlin side of the building.
