LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) – The 2024 Ice Cream Days in Le Mars marks a special milestone as Siouxland commemorates 30 years of the city being recognized as the Ice Cream Capital of the World.
“In 1994, we had a celebration, but it wasn’t yet Ice Cream Days,” explained Beth Meyer, senior manager of Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor. “We wanted to distinguish ourselves, and what better way than through ice cream?”
Three decades ago, Le Mars surpassed all other locations globally in ice cream production, prompting Iowa state representative Ralph Klemme to propose the city’s prestigious title.
“That’s when Ralph Klemme suggested becoming the ice cream capital of the world,” Meyer recounted. “He introduced a congressional resolution, it passed, and since then, we’ve proudly celebrated Ice Cream Days.”
However, the annual festivities extend beyond Blue Bunny treats.
“We have a rich heritage within Wells of families who’ve worked here,” Meyer continued. “Generations have contributed to making ice cream that’s celebrated worldwide, so when we gather, it’s also their celebration of producing a quality product.”
In addition to unlimited ice cream delights, attendees can enjoy a lineup of exceptional performances throughout the weekend.
“People always enjoy the music. The Saturday night concert is especially popular because the venue is so inviting,” noted Margaret Catton, Ice Cream Days committee member. “It’s a family-friendly event, perfect for bringing the kids.”
From Thursday’s family bike ride to Saturday morning’s parade, Le Mars showcases its community spirit.
“What makes this community special is how everyone pitches in when needed. Local businesses are heavily involved,” Catton emphasized. “We have activities like a scavenger hunt that engage the community and showcase our local treasures. It truly takes everyone’s hands and hearts to make this event possible.”
As Ice Cream Days enters its 30th year, Le Mars continues to demonstrate its commitment to celebrating its rich heritage and community unity through this beloved annual tradition.
