A human finger discovered in an ice cream by a Mumbai resident is likely from an employee at the Pune factory of Yummo Ice Creams, according to a police investigation.
The incident came to light when Dr. Brendan Ferrao, from Orlem in Malad, ordered three ice cream cones via an online app. While eating the ice cream, he felt something unusual in his mouth, initially thinking it was a “big nut.” Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a finger with a nail.
The police revealed that an employee at the Pune factory recently suffered a finger injury in an accident. They suspect the finger found in the ice cream belongs to this worker. DNA samples from the employee have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for confirmation.
Following this incident, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the license of Yummo Ice Creams’ Pune-based manufacturer pending investigation. “The premises of the ice cream manufacturer have been inspected by a team from FSSAI’s western region office and its license has been suspended,” an FSSAI spokesperson said, as reported by ANI.
In response, Yummo Ice Creams stated that they have ceased production at the third-party facility responsible for the contamination. “We have stopped manufacturing at this third-party facility, isolated the affected product at the facility and our warehouses, and are in the process of doing the same at the market level,” a company spokesperson said.
The FSSAI’s swift action aims to ensure consumer safety and prevent further incidents. The investigation continues as authorities await the DNA results to confirm the origin of the finger.
