In 2022, Emily Harpster launched SugarBear, an artisanal ice cream brand that emphasizes local ingredients and community collaboration. Harpster takes pride in crafting each pint from scratch, drawing inspiration from her personal experiences.
One standout flavor is Wild Woman Whiskey, reminiscent of spiked eggnog and inspired by a friend’s heartbreak. This creamy, smooth ice cream features subtle hints of nutmeg, combining whiskey and holiday spice for a rich, comforting taste.
Another creative offering is Call Me Old Fashioned, inspired by the classic cocktail. This flavor features Elijah Craig bourbon and sour Morello cherries, with a hint of orange and bitters. The sweet and refreshing base, complemented by the sour cherry topping, offers a versatile and edgy dessert experience.
SugarBear’s traditional flavors are equally noteworthy. Emperor of Ice Cream, a tribute to poet Wallace Stevens, is a chocolate pint that evokes the richness of a brownie. “I was trying to think what the Emperor of Ice Cream should be, and I knew it had to be chocolate,” says Harpster.
Mint Chocolate Chunk, made with coconut oil, offers a smooth texture and glossy mouthfeel. The strong mint flavor, contrasted by dark chocolate nibs, provides a refreshing blast perfect for summer.
With its unique flavors and commitment to quality, SugarBear is quickly becoming a favorite among ice cream enthusiasts.
