SAMUT SONGKHRAM, Thailand – In response to the internet sensation surrounding “Moo Deng,” a pygmy hippo from Khao Kheow Open Zoo, a local ice cream shop has launched a unique gelato shaped like the adorable creature, priced at just 69 baht.
The “Aroi” shop has embraced the viral popularity of Moo Deng, known for its charming and playful personality featured in numerous social media videos. The newly crafted gelato, designed to resemble a sleeping Moo Deng, is available in chocolate and Ovaltine flavors.
Owner Sitanan Sumangkalasombat, 41, explained that the shop previously offered dog- and cat-shaped ice creams, which garnered significant attention. With the rise of Moo Deng, Aroi has shifted focus to create this delightful gelato, complete with intricate details to capture the hippo’s endearing qualities. The gelato is made using an Italian gelato machine, ensuring a creamy texture, and each piece requires a minimum of eight hours to set.
In addition to the Moo Deng gelato, Aroi boasts a diverse menu featuring flavors such as Rum Raisin, Yogurt Blueberry, Hokkaido Milk, Vanilla, Strawberry, Lemon, and Dark Chocolate. One standout offering is the “Mae Klong Charm” flavor, which combines coconut milk, local sea plant chakram, sugar, and jackfruit. Despite chakram’s slightly salty and astringent notes, it harmonizes beautifully with the creamy sweetness of coconut milk and jackfruit, creating a unique taste experience. For health-conscious patrons, the shop also provides stevia-sweetened ice cream options.
