Salt & Straw, the beloved artisanal ice cream shop, has officially opened its second New York City location in the vibrant West Village at 540 Hudson Street. This new shop has been met with enthusiasm from locals and visitors eager to experience the brand’s renowned creative flavors.
The grand opening attracted journalists, influencers, and community members, providing guests the chance to sample an array of unique flavors. Highlights included the seasonal Jack o’ Lantern Pumpkin Bread, which combines comforting pumpkin with autumn spices, and the crowd-favorite Chocolate Gooey Brownie, featuring rich chocolate ice cream blended with gooey brownie chunks.
Among the unique offerings was the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, a flavor inspired by Italian cuisine. Described as a “strawberry triple threat,” it enhances the strawberries’ acidity with balsamic vinegar and cubeb black pepper, resulting in a delightful balance of tangy and sweet.
Co-founder Kim Malek expressed her excitement for the brand’s expansion in New York, stating, “We’re so excited to be in this neighborhood,” and emphasizing her desire to connect with the West Village community. She noted that popular flavors often return based on customer demand, saying, “It’s a very labor-intensive process; we can’t make much of it, but people love it so much that we bring it back every year.”
Kim and her brother, award-winning chef Tyler Malek, are the creative forces behind the brand’s flavors, curating a menu that tells stories through its ingredients. “You can sample every single ice cream that we have when you come in, so spending time getting to know not only about the ice creams and the flavors but also these collaborations with other companies is really special,” Kim explained.
Another highlight was Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip, featuring refreshing mint ice cream made with fresh mint leaves and dark chocolate flecks—a modern take on a classic flavor.
Salt & Straw’s commitment to innovation is reflected in its regular rotation of flavors. “So the first Friday of every month, we have all new flavors that come out,” Kim added, stressing the brand’s dedication to surprising customers with fresh options. She also highlighted the importance of customer feedback in shaping the menu.
With the opening of this new location, Salt & Straw solidifies its footprint in New York City, following the success of its Upper West Side shop. The brand plans to continue expanding, bringing its unique flavors and artisanal approach to neighborhoods across the city—sweetening New York one scoop at a time.
