Madison, WI (WKOW) — Babcock Dairy, based in Madison, has voluntarily recalled a limited number of ice cream products due to mislabeling concerns that could pose a serious health risk for individuals with allergies.
The recall affects approximately 41 cases of Orange Custard Chocolate Chip ice cream, which may have been mislabeled as Chocolate Peanut Butter. The mislabeling issue was discovered on the evening of November 4, 2024, following a customer report. Babcock Dairy explained that during production, a small number of Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream containers were mistakenly filled with Orange Custard Chocolate Chip ice cream, resulting in incorrect allergen information on the labels.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.
The affected ice cream was distributed to several Madison-area retailers, including:
- Babcock Dairy Store
- Metcalfe’s Markets
- Ken’s Meats & Deli
- Capitol Centre Market
Customers who purchased the affected products should check the production date printed on the bottom of the container (09 17 24). If the product is from the affected batch, customers are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
In response to the incident, Babcock Dairy swiftly removed the remaining affected products from store shelves within hours of the discovery. The company also announced immediate corrective actions to prevent future mislabeling, including retraining staff on proper labeling procedures, implementing additional checks during production and packaging, and improving the organization of packaging materials.
