A packaging solution developed by Berry Global for Diplom-Is’s Royal ice cream brand has been honored with the prestigious International Ice Cream Consortium (IICC) award for Best Packaging Solution. The recognition highlights the product’s innovative design and environmental benefits.
Key factors in the decision included the introduction of a non-carbon black colorant aimed at improving recyclability, as well as design adjustments that enhanced production efficiency and minimized waste. Through its collaboration with Berry Global, Diplom-Is has successfully pioneered the use of non-carbon black in ice cream containers, marking a significant step toward making packaging easier to recycle.
In another sustainability-focused initiative, CLUBZERØ and Barclays partnered during this year’s Wimbledon Championships to serve ice cream in returnable pots, aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste. The reusable containers were available in the Game, Seat, Match area, designed to withstand fluctuating temperatures, offer durability, and meet customer satisfaction expectations.
Meanwhile, Innovia Films introduced a new innovation in ice cream packaging. The company unveiled its white “ultra-low density” film, specifically developed for ice cream flow wrap packaging. Tested and launched at Innovia’s production facility in Płock, Poland, the film is designed to remain stable for up to six months under appropriate storage conditions, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional packaging materials.
Additionally, in August, Sappi Europe expanded its barrier paper portfolio with three new products aimed at both food and non-food packaging sectors, as well as the confectionery market. The new offerings include Guard ICC, a flexible paper designed for ice cream cones, and Guard Twist Gloss, a glossy, recyclable, wax-free paper intended for use in confectionery wrapping.
These innovations collectively highlight the growing shift toward sustainability within the ice cream industry, with companies increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly packaging solutions to reduce their environmental impact.
