Big Softie, a popular local ice cream shop known for its handmade soft serve made with locally-sourced ingredients, has opened its second Atlanta location in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood. The new store, which opened over Labor Day weekend, joins the original Big Softie in Summerhill, offering the same seasonal flavors and unconventional toppings that have made the brand a hit with locals.
The Summerhill location has built a strong following by offering a rotating selection of unique ice cream flavors, many of which are paired with unexpected toppings. These ice cream creations are made in collaboration with Little Tart Bakeshop, Big Softie’s sister company, located just next door on Georgia Avenue.
Elliot Harding, who has worked at the Summerhill location for nearly two years, spoke about the growth opportunities within the company, noting how employees are encouraged to take on new roles across both businesses.
“I really like working here; I love this company,” Harding said. “I think at some point I want to work on the Little Tart side. It’s nice that that’s an option. The company always wants there to be room for employees to grow, so if you want to try something different, you can switch sides.”
For Summerhill resident Amy Odle, the proximity of the original Big Softie to her home makes it a convenient spot to visit, especially with her children. She also appreciates the store’s seasonal offerings and its location near other shops.
“I really like that it’s in my neighborhood,” Odle said. “It’s an easy place to walk to with my kids and get a sweet treat. The seasonal flavors also keep it interesting.”
In an effort to support its employees, Big Softie adds a 4% surcharge to its orders to help cover the cost of employee health insurance. Odle said she finds this initiative commendable, despite the added cost.
“I think it’s really cool that they would do that, and I think all companies should do that, if I’m being honest,” Odle said.
The new Poncey-Highland location mirrors the original in terms of its community-oriented environment, surrounded by other businesses that attract foot traffic. Harding, who has worked in the area before, believes the new location will thrive in this bustling neighborhood.
“I think it’ll be great,” Harding said. “Summerhill has a small town feel to it, and lots of families live here, but the Highlands is busier and different. It’ll be interesting to see how the business compares, but I think it’ll definitely add to the energy of the area.”
Nathan Rivera, a junior at Midtown High School, was one of the first to visit the new location on its opening weekend. He said the large crowd and long line outside the shop were an immediate sign of its popularity, but the wait was worth it.
“When I first showed up, there was this huge line out the door, and there was nowhere to park,” Rivera recalled. “I thought about leaving because the line was so long. I eventually just decided to wait because I heard the ice cream was really good. It was definitely worth the wait.”
Rivera also praised the quality of the ice cream, noting how Big Softie’s focus on simple, high-quality flavors sets it apart from other ice cream shops.
“Usually ice cream places try to have a lot of different flavors that are just okay,” he said. “I think Big Softie does it right by being simplistic with the types and amount of flavors they offer. When you make classics like chocolate and vanilla really good, everybody’s going to be happy.”
With its new Poncey-Highland location, Big Softie continues to build on its reputation for high-quality, locally sourced ice cream and a strong commitment to employee welfare, making it a beloved destination for Atlanta residents.
