CARY, NC — Howdy Homemade Ice Cream, a nonprofit ice cream parlor that opened in downtown Cary earlier this year, will close its doors after just one year of operation. The business announced on social media Monday that its final day will be Nov. 24.
The parlor, located on South Walker Street next to Downtown Cary Park, opened in February to a strong reception, with a line of customers waiting to sample its homemade ice cream. Howdy Homemade Ice Cream is part of a Texas-based chain that has been in operation since 2015. The company is dedicated to creating jobs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and operates nine locations, including the one in Cary.
Phillip Lin, the owner of the Cary location, shared with The News & Observer that the parlor served as a training ground for people with disabilities, helping them develop transferable job skills while also offering opportunities for personal and professional growth. Of the nearly 20 staff members, 13 had an IDD.
In addition to its commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities, Howdy Homemade partnered with other local businesses, including Gigi’s Playhouse, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and young adults with Down syndrome. The two organizations shared a wall and collaborated to offer meaningful experiences for their communities.
The Cary parlor was also known for making all of its ice cream in-house, offering a rotating selection of specials and innovative flavors.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Howdy Homemade thanked its supporters, writing, “Thank you to those that have supported us. We will miss seeing you all.”
The News & Observer is seeking additional details about the closure and what customers can expect during the remaining two weeks of operation.
