FDA Warns of Severe Allergy Risk in Expanded Ice Cream Recall

by Alice

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about the risk of severe allergic reactions following an expanded recall of ice cream due to a labeling error.

Wisconsin-based Babcock Dairy announced the voluntary recall, which now includes “Orange Custard Chocolate Chip” ice cream mislabeled as “Chocolate Peanut Butter” ice cream. According to a notice posted on the FDA’s website Tuesday, the mix-up occurred during production when containers of Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream were inadvertently filled with Orange Custard Chocolate Chip.

The mislabeling poses a serious risk to individuals with egg allergies, as the Orange Custard Chocolate Chip flavor contains eggs, unlike the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products,” the FDA notice stated. Consumers who purchased the affected ice cream are urged to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

The expanded recall affects Babcock Dairy ice cream with the production dates “09 1724” (September 17, 2024) and “09 3024” (September 30, 2024), which are marked on the bottom of the containers. The products were distributed to four retail locations in the Madison, Wisconsin, area: Babcock Dairy Store, Metcalfe’s Markets, Ken’s Meats & Deli, and Capitol Centre Market.

The initial recall, announced earlier this month, was triggered on November 4 after a consumer reported the labeling issue. Initially, only products made on September 17 were affected. However, a second batch produced on September 30 was later found to have the same issue, prompting the expanded recall on October 18.

No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported to date. Babcock Dairy assured consumers that remaining affected products were removed from store shelves within hours of the issue being identified.

The company is implementing corrective measures, including retraining employees on labeling protocols, to prevent future errors.
