Weckerly’s Ice Cream, a popular Philadelphia-based dessert brand, is taking steps to expand its presence in the city by looking at properties in the Rittenhouse Square area for its third location. Cristina Torres, the current owner, described the move as the “natural next step” for the business.
“With our original Fishtown scoop shop and our second location in King of Prussia, Rittenhouse is the perfect spot to bridge the gap between the two,” Torres explained. She also expressed personal ties to the neighborhood, having lived in Center City and worked in Graduate Hospital.
While Weckerly’s has received approval for signage at 1600 Spruce Street, Torres confirmed to the Philadelphia Business Journal that the location has not yet been finalized. Torres, however, is optimistic about the expansion, describing Center City as an important milestone for the brand.
“Center City is almost like putting your big girl pants on. It’s just that next level and that next step,” she told the Philadelphia Business Journal. “I just want to bring more of Weckerly’s to more people in Philly.”
Founded in 2012 by Jen and Andy Satinsky in the back of a West Philly cafe, Weckerly’s has since grown from its humble beginnings to a well-established business. The company relocated to a repurposed textile plant in North Philadelphia before settling in Fishtown in 2016. In late 2023, Torres acquired Weckerly’s after the Satinskys announced the company would close by the end of the year. Torres reopened the Fishtown location on January 6 and opened the King of Prussia shop on September 19.
Weckerly’s is renowned for its unique and flavorful ice cream sandwiches, including varieties such as pumpkin pie, candied sweet potato, and butterscotch brindle.
The potential new Rittenhouse Square location marks a significant step in the company’s growth, offering a larger presence in Philadelphia’s competitive food scene.
