WEIRTON, W. Va. — Customers eagerly lined up at Prime in Weirton on Saturday to indulge in a sweet breakfast treat, as the ice cream parlor, bookstore, and candy shop marked its 36th anniversary with the popular event, “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.”
The event, which has become a local favorite, was expanded this year in response to frequent requests for more opportunities to enjoy ice cream in the morning. Dave Rogerson, owner of Prime, explained that while organizing the event is no small feat, the anniversary provided the perfect occasion to bring the celebration back.
“We’re doing ice cream for breakfast because people always ask for us to do it more than once a year,” Rogerson said. “It’s a big lift, and not something we can do every day. You need a lot of planning and a big turnout to make it work. So, we decided to tie it to our anniversary this year.”
The event featured a variety of ice cream creations, from classic cones and cups to more indulgent options like waffles and donuts topped with scoops of ice cream. One of the crowd favorites was the affogato—ice cream served with a pour of hot espresso.
For many customers, the event was about more than just the delicious treats. Pat Horton, a long-time attendee, noted that the day had become a cherished tradition.
“It’s a tradition. We come every year, but we also came in support of Dave and his 36th anniversary,” Horton said.
Rebekah Sims echoed that sentiment, adding, “It’s really fun, and I love doing it with my family. Eating ice cream for breakfast is every kid’s dream.”
Rogerson reflected on the significance of the anniversary, expressing his gratitude to the community that has supported Prime over the years. “It doesn’t surprise anyone more than me that this place has lasted for 36 years,” he said. “We started in downtown Weirton, moved to Three Springs Drive, and now we’re here. It’s a community resource, and we’re so fortunate for the support.”
The celebration doesn’t end here. Prime plans to hold another “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” in early February, coinciding with the national holiday dedicated to the delicious breakfast treat.
