A new ice cream shop, Mainely Scoops, is set to take over a former restaurant location in Wiscasset, though the timeline for its opening remains uncertain.
According to documents from the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission, the shop is planned for the small building at 277 Bath Road—also known as Route 1. Mainely Scoops intends to serve ice cream and snacks, but specific details on the grand opening have yet to be revealed.
This potential new business adds to a growing trend of ice cream establishments in the region. This summer, another ice cream shop opened along the waterfront in Rockland, despite some initial opposition from local residents. Meanwhile, in Waldo County, the owner of the popular Super Scoops ice cream stand in Belmont announced plans to sell the business this fall, amid a wave of closures affecting food establishments in Maine.
The Wiscasset building, which formerly housed Jodie’s Cafe and Bakery, was vacated earlier this year when the café relocated to a larger space on Water Street to accommodate its expansion, as reported by MaineBiz.
On November 19, the Wiscasset Select Board approved the business license for Mainely Scoops. Since the new ice cream shop is taking over a space previously used for a restaurant, it is not required to undergo a site plan review, according to local planning documents. However, any proposed changes to the property would necessitate further applications.
While it’s not clear when the shop will open, local residents are eager to see the new addition to Wiscasset’s growing list of food businesses.
