The Best and Worst of Ben & Jerry’s: 13 Flavors to Savor and 13 to Skip

by Alice

Ben & Jerry’s is a household name, beloved for its innovative flavors and commitment to quality ingredients. With nearly 100 flavors—some exclusive to specific regions—there’s a lot to love, but also a few that miss the mark. After years of sampling, we’ve narrowed down the top 13 flavors we can’t get enough of, as well as 13 that we can do without. Here’s our breakdown of the best and the worst.

13 Ben & Jerry’s Flavors We Love

Americone Dream

Inspired by Stephen Colbert, Americone Dream features fudge-covered waffle cone pieces swirled into a creamy caramel base. The crunchy waffle cones stay crispy, thanks to the thick caramel and chocolate coating. It’s an irresistible treat that lives up to its star-studded name.

Boom Chocolatta

Boom Chocolatta! Cookie Core
A mocha lover’s dream, this flavor combines mocha and caramel ice creams with fudge flakes, chocolate cookies, and a decadent chocolate cookie core. It’s a satisfying, multi-textured indulgence for anyone who loves a little complexity in their ice cream.

Cherry Garcia

A classic, Cherry Garcia pairs creamy cherry ice cream with cherry pieces and fudge flakes, offering a perfect balance of tart and sweet. It’s a refreshing departure from the more decadent varieties and a tribute to the Grateful Dead.

Coconut Seven Layer Bar

For coconut enthusiasts, this flavor delivers in every bite. Non-dairy coconut ice cream is packed with fudge chunks, graham cracker swirls, caramel, and walnuts, making it a delightful, indulgent treat.

Half Baked

Often considered a fan favorite, Half Baked blends vanilla and chocolate ice cream with chunks of cookie dough and brownie bits. It’s been a top seller for years and remains a quintessential Ben & Jerry’s experience.

Peanut Butter Fudge Core

Peanut butter and chocolate are a match made in dessert heaven, and Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Fudge Core takes it to another level. The ice cream features a peanut butter fudge core surrounded by chocolate and peanut butter ice creams, plus mini chocolate-covered peanut butter cups. It’s nearly impossible to resist.

Phish Food

This collaboration with the band Phish includes thick caramel and marshmallow swirls, along with large, fish-shaped chocolate chunks. It’s a fan favorite that supports environmental efforts in Vermont, making it as impactful as it is delicious.

Strawberry Cheesecake

A frozen cheesecake experience, this flavor features cheesecake-flavored ice cream with a thick graham cracker swirl and fresh strawberries. It’s a dessert-lover’s dream come true.

The Tonight Dough

A late-night treat inspired by Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Dough combines caramel and chocolate ice creams with swirls of chocolate cookie dough, chocolate chip cookie dough, and peanut butter cookie dough. It’s a diverse, satisfying mix of flavors.

Topped – Salted Caramel Brownie

For those who like a bit of extra indulgence, Ben & Jerry’s Topped line offers Salted Caramel Brownie, a vanilla base with fudge brownies and a salted caramel swirl, all topped with a layer of hardened chocolate ganache and mini caramel cups.

Topped – Tiramisu

With mascarpone ice cream as its base, Tiramisu flavor brings an authentic Italian touch. It’s complemented by shortbread pieces, espresso fudge chunks, and chocolate ganache for a coffee lover’s delight.

Topped – Whiskey Biz

Whiskey and ice cream might seem like an unusual pairing, but Ben & Jerry’s Whiskey Biz makes it work. This flavor combines brown butter bourbon ice cream with blonde brownies, whiskey caramel swirls, and a topping of white chocolate ganache and fudge chunks.

Triple Caramel Chunk

For caramel lovers, Triple Caramel Chunk is a dream. With caramel ice cream, a caramel swirl, and fudge-covered caramel pieces, it’s the ultimate caramel indulgence.

13 Ben & Jerry’s Flavors We Can Do Without

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

While cookie dough is a favorite, the plain Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor doesn’t measure up when compared to more exciting options like Half Baked or The Tonight Dough, which offer a more diverse mix of ingredients.

Chocolate Fudge Brownie

Much like the previous entry, Chocolate Fudge Brownie doesn’t stand out in a lineup of more complex flavors. While chocolate and brownies are delicious, we prefer a more layered experience.

Chocolate Therapy

Despite its promising name, Chocolate Therapy falls short. The combination of chocolate and chocolate pudding ice creams with only chocolate cookies is too one-dimensional for our taste.

Chunky Monkey

Banana ice cream just isn’t for everyone, and Chunky Monkey, with its banana base, fudge chunks, and walnuts, doesn’t change that. While some enjoy the combination, we’d rather skip it.

Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch

Coffee and toffee are both great on their own, but in this flavor, the toffee pieces don’t make enough of an impact to make the coffee ice cream exciting. It’s a flavor that doesn’t quite live up to the sum of its parts.

Glampfire Trail Mix

Pretzels and marshmallows don’t belong in trail mix ice cream, at least not in our opinion. Combined with chocolate-covered almonds, it feels more like a mishmash than a cohesive dessert.

Karamel Sutra

Despite its sultry name, Karamel Sutra doesn’t quite hit the mark. While the caramel core is a nice touch, the rest of the flavor—chocolate and caramel ice creams with fudge chips—feels too simple and uninspired.

Mint Chocolate Chip

Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Chip is good, but when you’re surrounded by so many inventive flavors, it feels a little too traditional. We’d opt for something more unique.

Netflix & Chill’d

A mix of fudge brownie pieces and pretzel swirls, Netflix & Chill’d just doesn’t resonate with us. While we like both components, together they don’t offer the satisfying combination we’re looking for in an ice cream.

New York Super Fudge Chunk

New York Super Fudge Chunk is overloaded with nuts—pecans, walnuts, and fudge-covered almonds—making it a bit too much for those who want a more balanced dessert. The fudge pieces are great, but the nuts overwhelm the flavor.

Peanut Butter Cup

While peanut butter lovers will appreciate this flavor, it’s just too one-note. Without additional complexity, Peanut Butter Cup doesn’t compare to more robust peanut butter-based flavors like Peanut Butter Fudge Core.

Pistachio Pistachio

Pistachio lovers may enjoy this flavor, but for us, the pistachio base isn’t exciting enough to justify its spot in the lineup. It’s a simple flavor that doesn’t offer much more than other brands’ versions.

Vanilla

Ben & Jerry’s makes excellent vanilla ice cream, but it’s just too plain for our taste. With so many flavors that feature mix-ins and complex combinations, vanilla rarely makes the cut.

Conclusion

Ben & Jerry’s has something for everyone, but with so many flavors to choose from, some are bound to stand out more than others. Whether you’re a fan of indulgent, multi-layered treats or prefer a simple, classic option, there’s no shortage of choices. However, for the most exciting experience, look beyond the basics and opt for one of their more adventurous, mix-in heavy creations.
