Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is set to significantly expand its presence in Greater Philadelphia, with plans to open as many as 20 locations in the coming years. The company, known for its specialty and vegan ice creams, currently operates four stores in the area and aims to increase that number to between 15 and 20.
The first step in this expansion will be the opening of a new store in Ardmore, slated for March 2025. The shop will be located at the Suburban Square retail center, occupying a 1,600-square-foot space previously home to dessert maker Kilwins. Positioned between Starbucks and clothing retailer Madewell, the new location will feature seating for 15 to 20 customers, making it the largest of Van Leeuwen’s Greater Philadelphia stores.
Ben Van Leeuwen, CEO of the ice cream company, expressed excitement about the growth potential in Philadelphia, noting that the region offers ample opportunities for expansion. “There’s still a lot of empty space for us to go all over the country, but especially Philly,” he said.
The Ardmore location has been in the works since the company first entered the Philadelphia market in 2021. Van Leeuwen explained that the company chose Suburban Square due to the high foot traffic in the area, which will help draw customers to the new store.
This move marks the beginning of a broader strategy to tap into the increasing demand for unique, high-quality ice cream in the Philadelphia region.
