LIBERTY, Maine (WABI) – While recent frigid temperatures might have most people reaching for hot cocoa, one Maine business is proving it’s never too cold for ice cream. John’s Ice Cream Factory in Liberty has officially opened its doors for the season, bucking the trend of ice cream shops that typically remain closed during the winter months.
For years, John’s Ice Cream Factory has embraced the cold, opening its doors in winter thanks to the unwavering support of its loyal community. The shop, founded by John Ascrizzi in 1998, has built a reputation for using only real, high-quality ingredients. From grinding fresh strawberries for their strawberry ice cream to crafting chocolate bases in-house, the shop’s commitment to authenticity has kept customers coming back, no matter the season.
This year’s opening marks a significant milestone for the business. Louis Pontillo, a longtime employee, has taken the reins as the new owner alongside his wife and son. The Pontillo family purchased the business from Ascrizzi earlier this month, ensuring the beloved ice cream shop’s legacy continues.
For Pontillo, maintaining the shop’s identity and traditions is a top priority. “When [John] trained me from day one, he said it’s really important to me that you understand the principle of what we’re doing here,” Pontillo shared. “I wanted to see John’s Ice Cream continue, and I felt like I was probably in the best position to make that happen.”
John’s Ice Cream Factory is now open daily from noon to 7 p.m., ready to serve up scoops of winter warmth to ice cream enthusiasts in Liberty and beyond.
