LEIGH ROAD – Ru’s Bubble Waffles, a popular local spot known for its bubble waffles, sundaes, ice cream, and drinks, has announced its closure due to mounting financial pressures. Owner Ru Hudson, 27, made the difficult decision to shut down the business after struggling with rising costs and economic challenges.
The shop, which became a favorite among families and residents, opened with a vision to fill a gap in the market. “I’ve always dreamed of having a little business,” said Hudson. “I noticed there wasn’t an ice cream shop in this area, and with my experience in food, I thought it was a great opportunity.”
However, the dream has been overshadowed by the harsh realities of running a small business in today’s economic climate. Hudson cited the soaring costs of products, rent, and electricity as primary reasons for the closure. “It’s all just too high at the minute,” he explained. “The cost of living is affecting everyone, and businesses like mine are struggling to survive. You can’t keep working to not make a living, can you?”
Hudson expressed deep gratitude to his mother, Trudy Hodges, who supported him as a business partner and runs her own shop, Interior Modern Curated. “I want to thank my mum for everything,” he said. “Without her, I wouldn’t have come this far.”
Despite surviving the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ru’s Bubble Waffles could not withstand the ongoing financial strain. Reflecting on his journey, Hudson highlighted the joy of connecting with the community as the most rewarding aspect of running the shop.
“The highlight has been the people I’ve met along the way—the families and the little kids I’ve seen grow up over the years,” he said. “It’s been a real privilege to be part of their lives and to have them come into the shop. That’s what I’ll cherish the most.”
After six years of operating seven days a week, Hudson plans to take a well-deserved break before exploring his next steps. While the future remains uncertain, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning as a business owner someday.
For now, the closure of Ru’s Bubble Waffles marks the end of an era for Leigh Road, leaving behind fond memories for its loyal customers and a legacy of community connection.
