Hong Kong, 11th February 2025 – Ho King-yuen, a pivotal figure in Hong Kong’s culinary scene and one of the founders of the beloved Mister Softee ice cream truck, has passed away at the age of 98. His family confirmed the news through an obituary, revealing that Ho died on 23rd January in Perth, Australia.
Ho’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1970, when he and his business partner, Tong Hok-yuan, secured the franchise rights to Mister Softee, an American soft-serve ice cream brand. A former employee of the Dairy Farm Group, Ho’s vision for the brand was shaped by his experience in the dairy industry and inspired by a trip to London in 1969. There, he observed the joy children felt while gathered around Mister Softee trucks, a sight that left a lasting impression. Upon returning to Hong Kong, he teamed up with Tong and friend Ted Drew to introduce the first Mister Softee truck to the city, making its debut on Chinese New Year’s Eve.
Over the years, Mister Softee became a symbol of summer in Hong Kong. The iconic white trucks with blue roofs and red fronts, playing the familiar tune of “The Blue Danube,” captured the hearts of generations of Hong Kongers. The brand’s affordable soft serve cones brought joy to families across the city, and its reputation grew, particularly among mainland tourists, in recent years, boosted by social media trends on platforms like Xiaohongshu.
Ho’s obituary remembered him not only for his business acumen but also for his warm, generous personality. Described as kind-hearted and ethical, Ho earned the affection of the community he served. His family shared that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, and was laid to rest on 8th February.
Ho King-yuen’s legacy endures in the Mister Softee brand, which remains a cherished part of Hong Kong’s cultural fabric. His contributions to the ice cream industry and the sweet memories he helped create for countless families continue to be fondly remembered.
