WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Cone, a beloved ice cream business in West Chester, has announced new ownership after 50 years of operation. The Wren family, former owners of the shop, shared the news on Facebook Saturday, marking the end of an era for the iconic establishment.
“After 50 wonderful years of serving up smiles and sweet treats, the time has come for us to pass the torch,” the Wren family wrote in a heartfelt message. “From our humble beginnings as K&W Creamy Whip in 1973 to building The Cone in West Chester in 1995, our family has been blessed beyond measure. Your support, smiles, and shared memories have made this journey unforgettable.”
The post expressed gratitude toward the community and highlighted the cherished experiences that made the business special, from the signature orange and vanilla swirl to loyal customers and employees. The Wren family also announced that Mike and Beth Heydt, well-established local business leaders, would be taking over the legacy of The Cone.
“We are thrilled to share that we have found the perfect buyers to carry on The Cone’s legacy!” the post continued. “Mike and Beth are working hard in preparation for Opening Day and will be introducing themselves soon.”
On Sunday afternoon, a message signed by the Heydt family appeared on The Cone’s Facebook page, confirming the transition. The new owners expressed excitement about their new venture, sharing their personal connection to The Cone.
“We are beyond thrilled to announce that we will be the new owners of The Cone in West Chester!” they wrote. “We lived in West Chester in the early 90’s when The Cone first moved here. We would visit often with our three daughters. We returned to the area in 2005 and have owned the Chicken Salad Chick in Mason since 2019.”
The Heydts emphasized their deep respect for the Wren family’s work, noting how they had built “an incredible legacy” in the community, especially through the shop’s signature swirl. They pledged to honor The Cone’s traditions while maintaining the beloved menu items that have made the business a staple in the area.
The Cone, which traces its roots back to 1973 as K&W Creamy Whip in the Lockland-Reading area, moved to its current location in West Chester in 1995. It was founded by Keith Wren’s parents, Ken and Loella, who helped establish the business’s enduring presence in the community.
