Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Foods Group, a Phoenix-based company, has issued a voluntary recall of its vanilla soft serve ice cream mix under the Mombo’s brand after it was discovered that the product may contain undeclared egg. The recall, initiated on January 19, 2025, has been classified as a Class I recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), indicating the highest risk level for consumers.
According to the FDA, undeclared allergens, such as egg in this case, pose a serious health risk to individuals with food allergies, potentially causing severe or life-threatening reactions, including anaphylaxis. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from rashes and abdominal discomfort to trouble breathing. This recall applies to a total of 4,422 half-gallon units, distributed across Nevada, packaged in cases of six units.
The ice cream mix, which was never sold to the public, was intercepted before reaching retailers. In a statement, Arizona Foods Group confirmed that all affected products had been retrieved and destroyed prior to reaching consumers. The company emphasized that no retail distribution occurred, and the recall was a precautionary measure to protect those with egg allergies.
The recall was triggered after it was determined that the ingredient egg, one of the FDA’s nine major allergens, was not listed on the product’s label. The FDA requires that all allergens be clearly declared on food packaging to ensure consumer safety.
Food manufacturers are required to maintain a Master Notification File, which outlines the steps for handling a recall, including tracking shipments, notifying retailers, and alerting the FDA. This recall serves as a reminder of the rigorous protocols in place to ensure food safety and protect consumers from potential health hazards associated with undeclared allergens.
