Fable Creamery in Red Bank, a charming shop known for its mouthwatering selection of cookies, brownies, ice cream, and candies, is making a mark with its plant-based and gluten-free offerings. The shop is led by Michelle Storey, whose passion for pastry and chocolate-making has shaped the business into a haven for those seeking allergen-friendly indulgences.
Storey’s journey into the world of food began at Brookdale Community College’s Culinary Education Center in Asbury Park, where she developed a love for chocolate-making. That passion deepened during her first job at Middletown’s 2 Chicks With Chocolate, and later, her move to San Diego where she worked as a pastry chef and sold handmade chocolates at farmers markets. It was there that Storey became intrigued by a vegan lifestyle, which she now follows and promotes through her business.
“I just feel better eating more plant-based,” Storey said, noting that following a vegan diet doesn’t require sacrificing flavor. This philosophy guides Fable Creamery, which offers an array of dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan treats, sweetened with organic cane sugar, coconut sugar, and maple syrup, free from artificial additives.
The idea for the business took root after Storey returned to New Jersey, where she worked as a personal chef for a family with dietary restrictions. When asked to make ice cream, she created a strawberry cheesecake flavor using coconut milk, which sparked her curiosity to explore other plant-based flavors. During the pandemic, Storey started delivering homemade ice cream, cookies, and brownies to friends and family. The positive feedback soon led to an unexpected request: could they buy her treats?
In December 2022, Storey opened Fable Creamery on Monmouth Street, a place dedicated to allergy-friendly desserts. The bakery’s offerings include oat and rice flour cookies, waffle cones made from almond flour, and an assortment of vegan ice cream flavors such as chocolate brownie, vanilla bean, strawberry milk, and peanut butter cup.
Storey’s commitment to providing healthier alternatives without sacrificing flavor has resonated with customers from across the state. “I knew it was needed, not only for vegans but also for people with dietary restrictions,” Storey said. For some, Fable Creamery’s ice cream is the first they’ve had in years. Storey’s personal connection to her customers is what makes her work meaningful.
Whether it’s a cookie, a scoop of ice cream, or a dark sea salt bon bon, Fable Creamery’s treats offer a sweet escape for those looking for indulgence without compromise.
