Jimmie Cone, the iconic soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt shop, will kick off its 63rd season in Damascus on March 17. The beloved local establishment, known for its rich and creamy ice cream, has been a staple in the community since 1962. In addition to the original Damascus location, Jimmie Cone operates a second shop in Mount Airy, which opened in 1997.
Dan and Bonnie Leiter have owned Jimmie Cone since 1990, purchasing the business from Bill and Dorothy Harris, the son and daughter-in-law of the original owner. Their decision to expand in 1997 allowed them to bring their classic treats to Mount Airy, where the store is slightly larger than the Damascus location. Both shops—located at 26420 Ridge Road in Damascus and 1312 S Main Street in Mount Airy—serve a variety of classic ice cream flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and twist, available daily.
In addition to the staple flavors, Jimmie Cone offers a rotating selection of strawberry, black raspberry, and orange flavors, which can also be served twisted with vanilla. For those seeking lighter alternatives, the shop also features frozen yogurt options, including fat-free and fat- and sugar-free varieties that change weekly.
One standout feature of Jimmie Cone’s ice cream is its creamy texture, made with 10 percent butterfat—nearly double the butterfat content of soft serve from chains like McDonald’s and Dairy Queen. During warm weather, both locations are often busy, with long lines of eager customers, though the service remains quick and efficient.
