A woman from Port Moresby has launched a successful ice-cream business to support her family, with plans to expand her product offerings. Seni Roy, originally from Mahuru village in the capital, founded Felsen Frozen Desserts in 2021 with a goal of introducing locally-made frozen treats to the market.
Roy initially experimented with store-bought ingredients and dairy but soon shifted to using fresh, dairy-free ingredients after learning about their health benefits. “I began experimenting in 2021 with store-bought ingredients and dairy. When I learned more about health benefits, I decided to use fresh dairy-free ingredients to make the ice cream healthier and more nutritious,” Roy explained.
Her ice cream flavours are inspired by the tropical climate of Papua New Guinea, incorporating a variety of local ingredients that provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. While ice cream is her main product, Roy also sells a range of other homemade items including multipurpose coconut oil, skin-whitening soap, cakes, cupcakes, lamingtons, milkshakes, and lunch packs. Roy bundles these products into combo packs priced at K25, which include a rice pack, cake jar, and ice cream.
Roy operates primarily at the Pom City Market and village SME stalls. On a typical day, she spends K400 on ingredients and new stock. After selling out, she earns K700 to K800 in revenue, resulting in a profit of K300 to K400.
Looking ahead, Roy hopes to expand her business by offering a variety of frozen desserts. She is determined to offer a healthier alternative to the largely dairy-based ice creams currently available in Papua New Guinea. “Most ice cream sold in PNG is dairy-based, and my goal is to change that by producing and selling locally-made ice cream using fresh tropical ingredients,” she said.
Roy’s dedication to her business is driven by her desire to provide for her daughter, with the income supporting her well-being and education.
