HOLLY POND — The youth baseball season in Holly Pond is set to begin, and the community will have more food options this year after the town council approved a local business venture on March 3. John and Sheree Bennefield, owners of the new mobile ice cream parlor “Sweet Addictions,” received approval to operate their business at the park during baseball games.
The Bennefields approached the council to request permission to set up their mobile parlor in the parking lot for the duration of the season. John Bennefield, who has observed the heavy foot traffic at the park during spring and summer months while attending his children’s games, said the location was ideal for establishing their new venture.
In discussing the proposal, Mayor Carla Hart noted that allowing a mobile vendor to set up at or near the park would be a first for the town. She inquired about the pricing practices the Bennefields had encountered at other locations. Bennefield explained that rates vary, with some locations using fixed rates while others adjust based on the time of year or special events.
Some council members raised concerns about the potential impact on the town’s municipally operated concession stand, fearing the additional offerings might reduce sales and park funds. However, they did not oppose the proposal.
Councilmember Ricky Carr suggested a compromise, proposing that the Bennefields be allowed to operate once or twice a week during games for a flat rate of $25. He added that the fee could be reevaluated at the end of the season if it significantly impacted concession sales.
Councilmember Gladys Wisner announced that team practices had begun, and regular games would commence in the first week of April.
