Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, a beloved chain known for crafting its frozen treats fresh in-store, is set to open its first location in the Kansas City area. The new shop will be located at 11885 W. 95th St., near Oak Park Mall in Overland Park. This spot was previously occupied by Freezing Moo, a rolled ice cream shop, and is situated next to popular dining spots like Bibibop Asian Grill and Cava.
A spokesperson for Handel’s confirmed the plans to open in Overland Park but did not specify an exact opening date. The company anticipates welcoming customers later this year.
The ice cream chain, founded in 1945 by Alice Handel in Youngstown, Ohio, has maintained its commitment to using original recipes and fresh ingredients, including fruit from Handel’s own garden. Despite its growth to multiple locations nationwide—spanning states like Indiana, Colorado, Texas, California, and Arkansas—the company continues to hold true to its roots and traditional methods of making ice cream.
