Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream, located at 44 Front St. in Worcester, is up for sale, with current owner Rita McCabe seeking a new proprietor to take over the business. McCabe, who also owns a Sub Zero franchise in Nashua, N.H., explained that managing both locations has become challenging, particularly due to the long commute to Worcester.
“It’s been tough to manage the store remotely, and I would prefer someone local who I can train to run the operation,” McCabe told MassLive. “My goal is to have someone buy the location and continue operating it as a franchisee.”
Once the sale is finalized, McCabe confirmed that the store would remain unchanged, and its equipment would be included in the sale. McCabe also mentioned that several potential buyers have already shown interest, with hopes to complete the transaction by May. The store is expected to sell for less than $100,000, although McCabe did not disclose the exact price.
Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream, a unique franchise based in Utah, is known for its distinctive ice cream-making process using liquid nitrogen. Customers can select a base, flavorings, and toppings, which are then instantly frozen into ice cream by liquid nitrogen. The innovative concept gained nationwide attention when it was featured on an episode of Shark Tank—an episode McCabe watched before deciding to open her first franchise.
McCabe and her husband, Mark, began managing their first Sub Zero franchise in Nashua in 2014, followed by the Worcester location in 2022. McCabe also owns an ice cream store in Manchester, N.H. The Worcester franchise will continue to offer catering services, in addition to the in-store experience, under the new ownership.
“It’s a fun business to be in,” McCabe said. “Watching families come in and enjoy the product with smiles on their faces is incredibly rewarding.”
