Chapman’s Ice Cream Freezes Prices Amid U.S. Tariffs, Prioritizes Canadian Suppliers

by Alice

Chapman’s Ice Cream, Canada’s largest independent ice cream manufacturer, has announced it will maintain current prices for the rest of 2025 in response to the ongoing U.S. trade war. The company cited U.S. tariffs as a significant threat to Canada’s sovereignty, drawing comparisons to the challenges faced during the Second World War.

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada threatens to increase the cost of American-made ingredients, Chapman’s Ice Cream has pledged to absorb all immediate price hikes due to tariffs for the remainder of the year. Ashley Chapman, the company’s chief operating officer, made the announcement on social media, emphasizing that the company would prioritize Canadian-first policies.

“We are actively looking internationally for alternative suppliers for ingredients unavailable in Canada,” Chapman said. “Together, we are stronger, and we will continue reinforcing this commitment within our operations.”

Founded in Markdale, Ontario, in 1973, Chapman’s Ice Cream operates as a family-owned business. With a product line of over 280 frozen treats, the company has become a staple in the Canadian dessert market, offering everything from ice cream to popsicles.

The ongoing trade dispute represents a low point in Canada-U.S. relations, with President Trump frequently accusing Canada of exploiting the U.S. economy. Recently, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, prompting a reciprocal response from Ottawa. However, Trump temporarily suspended the tariff on Thursday, citing the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and offering manufacturers time to find U.S.-made alternatives.

The tariff suspension will remain in place until April 2, providing Canadian manufacturers time to adjust. Meanwhile, tariffs on aluminum and steel are set to take effect on March 12.

While U.S. tariffs primarily affect American importers, Canadian tariffs on U.S. goods will result in higher prices for Canadian consumers and businesses.

Chapman’s Ice Cream has long been involved in supporting its local community. In 2016, the company played a key role in keeping Beavercrest public school in Markdale open. This effort ultimately led to the announcement of funding for a new school in 2018. Last fall, Chapman’s donated $500,000 to enhance the school’s facilities, including playgrounds and gym equipment.

The company also demonstrated its commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic by raising employee wages and purchasing ultra-low temperature freezers to help store COVID-19 vaccines in the Grey and Bruce region.

Chapman’s recent decision to freeze prices has been met with widespread praise on social media, with many commending the company’s continued dedication to its values. One social media user wrote, “Once again, your standards and dedication are immeasurable.”
