BELMONT, ME — As warmer days approach in Maine, ice cream enthusiasts can look forward to the reopening of Super Scoop, a popular ice cream stand along Route 3 in Belmont, under new ownership. The transition comes after founder Julie Heeter announced her retirement and the sale of the business in September.
Jason and Penny Peasley, residents of Lincolnville and owners of River Ducks Ice Cream in Camden, have purchased Super Scoop and are planning a grand reopening this spring. Though the Peasleys are no strangers to the ice cream business, having successfully run River Ducks for 15 seasons, they are excited to bring their energy and passion for ice cream to this new venture.
“We love seeing everyone’s smiling faces. You can’t be sad with ice cream in your hands,” Penny Peasley shared. “It’s such a joy to see the smiles when people are picking their flavors.”
The Peasleys’ vision for Super Scoop includes a few modifications. While the stand previously served hot food, they plan to focus exclusively on ice cream, retaining most of the 32 flavors that made Super Scoop a local favorite. Additionally, they will introduce soft serve ice cream to the menu.
As the Peasleys take the reins, they plan to hire additional staff, a change from the single-owner model Heeter operated. Penny is especially enthusiastic about the opportunity to mentor young employees, many of whom return year after year, building strong relationships with the business.
“I love teaching staff business practices and helping them grow. A lot of them come in when they’re 14 and stay until their junior year of college,” Penny said. “It’s a fun and rewarding experience, and we’re excited to continue that tradition.”
Known for its lively atmosphere, the Peasleys hope to bring the same vibrant energy to Super Scoop that they’ve cultivated at River Ducks. They anticipate opening the stand in mid- to late May and will remain open until September, with extended hours during peak summer months.
In addition to their ice cream business, Jason Peasley serves as the fire chief for Rockport, while Penny works as a financial consultant for an international company.
“We’re excited to take the torch and build on what Julie started,” Penny said. “The summers are busy, but we’re ready. Everyone loves ice cream, and as long as we have ice cream, we’ll be just fine.”
Super Scoop’s opening marks an exciting new chapter for the beloved ice cream stand, ensuring that it will remain a cherished spot for locals and visitors alike for many years to come.
