Japanese food giant Ajinomoto has unveiled three new ice cream flavours powered by Solein, a sustainable protein developed by Finnish food-tech company Solar Foods. The ice creams, under Ajinomoto’s brand Atlr.72, mark the brand’s expansion beyond sweets to include everyday food options.
The new flavours include Vanilla with mochi, Chocolate with lemon peel, and Salty caramel with nuts. These ice creams are crafted with Solein, a protein derived from a natural, non-modified single-cell organism, offering a creamy texture and reduced environmental footprint.
Solein’s production process is independent of weather conditions, land use, and large-scale water consumption, making it one of the most sustainable proteins available today. The partnership between Solar Foods and Ajinomoto, which began in 2023, aims to bring more environmentally-friendly food choices to consumers.
Juan Manuel Benítez-García, Chief Commercial Officer of Solar Foods, emphasized the benefits of Solein: “We are proud to support the Ajinomoto Group in promoting a new food lifestyle that includes healthier, more sustainable snacking and meal options. Solein offers superior nutritional value, taste, and functionality while minimizing environmental impact.”
The ice cream products feature vibrant flower- and bird-shaped cookies, reflecting the brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The ice creams’ yellow hue comes from the natural carotenoids in Solein, which symbolize the earth element in Chinese philosophy, further reinforcing Atlr.72’s environmental message.
The new range will be available at the Atlr.72 food truck, which will be touring various locations across Singapore.
