Blue Cow Ice Cream Co., a beloved small-batch ice cream maker, has announced plans to open its second Virginia Beach location at The Traditions at Sherwood Lakes in the Pungo area. The new shop is expected to open its doors later this summer, marking the company’s sixth location since its inception in 2017.
Founded in Roanoke, Virginia, Blue Cow first entered the Virginia Beach market in 2019 with a shop at Cape Henry Plaza on Shore Drive. The company quickly gained popularity for its commitment to using high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients to create unique, hand-crafted ice cream flavors. Blue Cow’s culinary team, led by Jason Kiser, has developed over 100 flavors, including dairy-free options, over the past eight years.
Jason Kiser, who studied the science of ice cream manufacturing at Penn State University, attributes the company’s success to its craft approach. “It’s our techniques and our attention to quality that make our products craft,” Kiser said. “We spin our ice cream fresh daily, and nearly everything going into the ice cream is hand-made in our production kitchen. The difference in taste is clear when compared to flavoring with manufactured syrups or extracts.”
Blue Cow’s menu caters to both traditional ice cream lovers and culinary enthusiasts, offering a mix of classic favorites and seasonal, inventive flavors. The company’s focus on market availability and seasonality ensures a dynamic selection of offerings for customers year-round.
For owners Jason and Carolyn Kiser, the focus goes beyond just making great ice cream—it’s about creating an exceptional customer experience. “Our shops are designed to be welcoming spaces for people to gather and enjoy,” said Carolyn Kiser. “The connection to the outdoors at Sherwood Lakes, with its walking paths and lake views, is an important part of the experience.”
Carolyn added, “One of the real joys in our business is playing a small part in the celebrations and life moments our customers experience over a handcrafted scoop of ice cream.”
The new location in Pungo is currently under construction and is slated to open in late summer 2025. Other businesses set to join the Sherwood Lakes community include Taste Unlimited, La Patrona, and Sedona Taphouse.
