PHOENIX — Bubbies Ice Cream, the top-selling mochi ice cream brand in the natural channel, has announced a major sustainability initiative with the introduction of certified home-compostable packaging. The move, timed to coincide with Earth Month in April, replaces the brand’s plastic clamshell packaging with eco-friendly paper pulp trays. This change is expected to eliminate approximately 310 tons of plastic waste annually, significantly reducing Bubbies’ environmental impact and advancing its mission to “keep paradise clean.”
In partnership with Earthcycle, Bubbies developed these exclusive, certified home-compostable trays, which meet the rising consumer demand for environmentally responsible products. According to Diversitech Global, 75% of shoppers prioritize sustainability in their purchasing decisions.
The new paper pulp trays, which break down in home composting environments within six months, offer consumers an easy way to reduce their ecological footprint. After extensive testing, Bubbies confirmed that the new packaging matches the functionality of its previous plastic trays while reducing plastic use by 94%. This packaging shift will eliminate the need for:
621,703 lbs. of plastic (equivalent to 31.2 million water bottles)
21.7 million kBtu of energy (enough to power 136.3 U.S. homes annually)
1.6 million lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions (the equivalent of emissions from 158.6 cars each year)
“From the very beginning, Bubbies has been dedicated to sharing our ice cream creations in a way that benefits both our customers and the planet,” said Katie Cline, Vice President of Marketing at Bubbies Ice Cream. “Now that we’ve completed our transition from plastic to paper pulp trays, we encourage consumers to join us this Earth Month by composting their trays and making mindful choices that contribute to a cleaner, greener future.”
Bubbies’ commitment to sustainability extends beyond packaging. The brand has partnered with various organizations to clean up over 35,000 pounds of ocean-bound plastic, reinforcing its mission to create a positive, lasting impact on the environment. Through these efforts, Bubbies continues to demonstrate that simple changes can lead to significant environmental benefits.
The new paper pulp trays are now available at select Whole Foods Market, Publix, Sprouts Farmers Market, Safeway, H-E-B, Gelson’s Market locations, and through the Bubbies website, along with many other retailers nationwide.
