EDINBURGH, Ind. – A new ice cream shop in downtown Edinburgh is blending traditional American treats with Mexican flair—all served in a visually captivating setting designed with social media in mind.
Sweet Treats Las Comadres officially opened its doors on April 6 at 114 E. Main Cross St., taking over the former location of Greek’s Pizzeria. The family-owned shop offers homemade ice cream in classic flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla, alongside Mexican-inspired varieties such as queso and rompope.
In addition to ice cream, the shop features a unique menu that fuses American and Mexican street foods, including fresh fruit popsicles, mini pancakes, hot dogs, and traditional snacks like elote, chicharron preparado, and dorilocos—a twist on the walking taco.
The name “Las Comadres,” which translates to “co-mothers” in Spanish, reflects the close family relationship between co-owners Rocio Rios and Lupita Quezada, who have shared parenting responsibilities for over two decades.
“For the last 20 years, they’ve kind of been into this parenting thing together,” said Yajaira Quezada, daughter of Rocio Rios and niece of Lupita Quezada. “They thought, if we can co-parent these kids together, why not start a business together too?”
The idea for the shop came when Greek’s Pizzeria went up for sale. The family, who also runs the local Mexican restaurant El Potro, saw it as an opportunity to bring a fresh, modern business to the historic heart of the town.
According to Yajaira Quezada, the vision goes beyond ice cream. The owners wanted to create a place that would attract local teenagers—especially during the summer months—who often travel to nearby Greenwood or Indianapolis for entertainment.
With decor designed to be “Instagram-worthy,” the shop features whimsical ice cream-themed furniture, a flower-draped ceiling, a neon-lit grass wall, and a swing adorned with blooms. Inside, customers can also enjoy a foosball table and a classic Pac-Man arcade machine.
Lupita Quezada’s children, Jazmin and Jesus, are also involved in daily operations. Jazmin leads the store’s design direction, bringing a trendy and youthful energy to the space, while Yajaira manages the shop’s social media presence.
“The store is a complete 180 from what it used to be,” said Yajaira. “We worked from the ground up to reimagine the space.”
The co-owners hope the shop serves as an inspiration for other entrepreneurs in Edinburgh.
“We’re trying to show other small business owners that something can thrive here if it’s presented in the right way,” Yajaira said. “There are already so many hidden gems in this town. We just want to modernize the experience and show what’s possible.”
While some customers have experienced a bit of culture shock when trying unfamiliar flavors, Yajaira said the overall response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Some people say our vanilla isn’t what they expected,” she said. “But it’s homemade, and it’s a good product. The support we’ve received has been a blessing.”
For Rios and Quezada, the shop represents more than just a business—it’s a long-held dream brought to life.
“It’s surreal,” said Quezada. “A dream come true.”
Both owners also hope to inspire other women to pursue their goals, regardless of age or background.
“They’ve always been moms and supportive wives,” Yajaira said. “But now they’re stepping into this new era as business owners. Seeing that transformation and supporting them has been the most rewarding part for me.”
Sweet Treats Las Comadres is open daily from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shop currently accepts cash only, though credit card options are expected in the coming weeks. The business is active on Facebook and Instagram, with plans to launch a website and online ordering soon.
