PORTLAND, Ore. — Combining two beloved staples of West Coast culture, Salt & Straw Ice Cream is set to introduce a distinctive lineup of beer-infused ice creams crafted in collaboration with renowned breweries from across the region. Launching on May 31, these innovative flavors will offer ice cream enthusiasts a taste of some of the Pacific Northwest and California’s most celebrated brews.
Among the highlights are Breakside Brewery’s Barrel-Aged Chocolate Stout, Métier Brewing Company’s Black Stripe Porter and Bread Pudding, Russian River Brewing Company’s Supplication Ale with Manchego, Monkish Brewing Co.’s Space Cookies and Cream Hazy IPA, and La Tropical’s La Original Lager with Guava from Miami.
Tyler Malek, Salt & Straw’s cofounder and head ice cream maker, expressed his excitement for the creative challenge of incorporating beer flavors into their renowned ice cream offerings. Malek emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of each brew while ensuring it translates seamlessly into a creamy, indulgent treat.
“Crafting beer-flavored ice cream presents a unique set of culinary puzzles,” Malek explained. “Our goal is to deconstruct each beer and artfully reconstruct its essence in a delightful frozen form, allowing the distinctive character of the original brew to shine through.”
In addition to offering these innovative flavors in-store and for nationwide shipping, Salt & Straw will showcase its Brewer’s Series at Portland’s Beer Week, taking place from June 15 to 23. The festivities will include a series of events across the city, offering patrons the opportunity to engage with the intersection of beer and ice cream culture.
Notable events include a “Make Your Own IPA Ice Cream” session led by Tyler Malek and Breakside’s Head Brewer Ben Edmunds at Breakside’s Dekum location, Breakside’s Woodlawn Block Party, and a collaboration with Breakside Brewing for “SNACKDOWN VI: SNACKING NEVER DIES!” at Loyal Legion.
As part of the Portland Beer and Cheese Festival, Salt & Straw will serve its Russian River’s Supplication Sour Brown Ale with Manchego ice cream, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovative flavor pairings and culinary creativity.
