The annual awards celebrating the achievements of Welsh producers and suppliers in the burgeoning food and drink industry have recognized Glaslyn of Beddgelert as the Upskilling Business of the Year. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the ice cream parlour’s dedication to fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement among its workforce.
Founded in 1970 as a gift shop and café by Joan and Bert Rowley, Glaslyn later evolved into an ice cream parlour and pizzeria under the stewardship of their son Derek and his wife Elaine. Today, their daughter Bonnie leads the business, which boasts a team of eight year-round employees and an additional 28 seasonal staff members.
Bonnie’s commitment to staff development has been instrumental in propelling Glaslyn’s growth trajectory. Since assuming leadership in 2018, she has spearheaded initiatives aimed at enhancing skills, knowledge, and productivity within the team. Managers and department heads have undergone rigorous Institute of Leadership Management courses, while all food handlers receive accredited food safety training.
Reflecting on the award, Bonnie expressed her gratitude and emphasized the transformative impact of investing in staff development. “Continuous investment in skills has not only enhanced business performance but has also fostered a more empowered and confident workforce,” she stated. “Our focus on personal and professional growth has not only boosted productivity but has also contributed to staff retention—a critical aspect in our industry.”
In addition to its recognition for staff development, Glaslyn was also shortlisted for the Sustainable Business of the Year award. The company’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship includes initiatives such as carbon offsetting, plastic reduction efforts, and partnerships with local suppliers committed to sustainability.
Looking ahead, Bonnie outlined plans for further improvements, including premises upgrades and the installation of solar panels to promote energy efficiency. She urged fellow businesses to capitalize on available support for staff development, emphasizing the long-term benefits of investing in workforce skills.
