Barnsley Council is set to implement new regulations that will ban ice cream vans from trading within 100 meters of schools without written consent. The council cabinet will finalize these changes during a meeting on June 11 following a public consultation.
Under the new rules, mobile vendors must also relocate after 20 minutes at any given spot. Additionally, ice cream vans will be prohibited from operating in Barnsley town center. Businesses with a food hygiene rating below three will have their street trading consent suspended.
The updated policy requires mobile traders to undergo DBS checks to obtain a street trading license. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the policy states, “Mobile traders must move from position to position remaining stationary for no longer than 20 minutes to initially attract customers and thereafter only long enough to serve customers present. The vehicle must move on as soon as the last customer has been served and no other customer is clearly awaiting service.”
These measures aim to regulate mobile trading more effectively and ensure higher food safety standards in Barnsley.
